Four Reasons Why A River Cruise Is Special

River cruise ships are usually somewhat smaller than their ocean going counterparts. Usually they accommodate about 100 to 300 passengers on board. However, most of the river cruise ships resemble quality hotels with a lot of infrastructure (like swimming pools, sun decks, gyms, bars, lounges etc.). In principle a river cruise ship is a swimming hotel and a moving viewing platform. Thus traveling with a river cruise ships makes your journey comfortable and hassle-free while covering long distances at the same time. Once on board of the ship you have to unpack only at the first day and then you can forget about it for your whole journey. When the river cruise ship docks on the many attractions along side the river there is no stress either. Often the docks are in the very center of the cities and you just have to walk over the short gangway and you can start to discover the sites of the city in no time. You do not have to check for time schedules of trains, airplanes, buses. No queues and no fears of getting lost at a railway station. Life is easy and relaxing on board of a river cruise ship.

For centuries rivers have been almost the exclusive way of long-distance travel. Thus rivers have been seed-bed for the development of cities. Almost all historical cities in Europe for example are to be found at rivers. The same holds true for much of Asia and even for good parts of the U.S. Thus, river cruises offer a great way to explore all the interesting cities of a given region during one journey. Indeed, the waterfronts of many cities are famous for its grandeur and the view to many cities is the most amazing from the river itself. River cruising guarantees that you do not miss these views. Often the gangway at the docking station leads you directly into the very historical center of a city.

The landscapes formed by the large rivers suitable for river cruising are usually extremely amazing since they are the outcome of geologic processes which lasted for hundred of thousands of years. Interesting landscapes like narrow gorges, steep walls and rocky hills, terraces and river meadows are to be crossed while traveling on a river cruise ship. Since rivers have such an enormous economic relevance these amazing landscapes are dotted with historical artifacts like medieval castles, abbeys and monasteries, vine-yards, fortresses, towns, old bridges etc. All these historical sites make for a constant change of scenery while traveling on board of a river cruise ship giving your journey the feeling of a time travel.

There are quite many regions in the world which are extremely difficult to travel overland. These regions are opened up by river cruises even for the inexperienced traveler or those travelers who do not want to abstain from their usual comfort and safety. Examples for those regions are the Amazon basin in Brazil, the Nile valley in Egypt and many other regions in Asia where land travel can be really uncomfortable.

River Cruises For All Interests

River cruises are available in virtually all continents and regions over the whole world. Thus, almost all needs and interests are satisfied. If you are interested in medieval history and great cities, Europe or Asia might be your perfect choice. If you are more into nature and want to discover the last regions of the world unspoilt by human civilization you might consider a river cruise at the Amazon. Or you would prefer the heat and dry air of a desert while discovering one of the very first great civilizations of human mankind? No problem, then go for a Nile river cruise. Now, that you have learned about the manifold advantages and pleasures of river cruising it is only up to you to find the river cruise which caters to your very special interests.

Hi qlcoach. Thank you for stopping by. Ocean cruising is definitely the "big" type of cruising in relation to river cruising. My favorite ocean cruising would be something like exploring Alaska or the Antarctica.

Thanks for your comment, Peggy W. I am thinking of asking the river cruise industry if they would mind paying me a fee for my praise of this type of travel :). Feel free to take a look at other hubs dedicated to cruises on specific rivers (there are quite a few here, of course written by other hubbers as well).
